Whisker Biscuit Mount Update and Breakdown Arrow Holster

Hey Y’all,

This week we’ve made some progress with some accessories for the Y-Shot Slingshot and the Breakdown Arrows. The Whisker Biscuit Mount came in, it looks and works great! We still may change the design a bit more but, that’s mainly aesthetic. A few weeks ago we started working with Bob from bobsleatherworks.com and we came up with design for a holster for the Breakdown Arrow Set. This holster holds 3 arrows and fits on belts up to 2 inches wide. Expect more pictures as we do more testing.

Thanks for Reading,
Daniel Helms

Ammo dispenser update

So we’ve kept working on ammo dispensers for the slingshots. The magnets are working really well on all the concepts, and I’m confident that by the time we’re done we’re gonna have a couple of great products.

IMG_20130717_133600 IMG_20130717_134119 IMG_20130717_134622

The big advantage with the leather concept is that it has great functionality, despite a really simple design. We put shock cord through the loops in the leather, which makes it very flexible. The number of ways to attach the dispenser to just about anything seems almost endless!

IMG_20130717_135655

Another concept from the early idea generation process that we brought back to life is a really simple construction consisting of a piece of bent aluminum plate and a single magnet. The idea is that the container encloses the balls to protect them from being pushed off if the container bumps in to something. The magnet, which sits in the bottom slot, makes sure that new ammo is automaticly feeded out as a ball is removed.

As you can see this simple mock-up already works great, although we might still have a bit of work to do when it comes to the aestethics. More of that some other time!

Montie Gear Y-shot Wrist Adapter – Robin

Hello everyone!

My name is Robin, and I’m the next summer intern in line to introduce myself. Just like Richard, I’m an Indutrial Design Engineering student from Chalmers University in Sweden, and just like Richard, I’ve started working with accessories for the Y-shot. My main project so far has been a wrist support. This will unload the stress on the wrist, which can be significant if you’re shooting a lot or if you’re using a strong rubber band.

IMG_20130703_164351

I tested a few mock-ups to get an approximation of the right dimensions, and to make sure that the side brackets wouldn’t get in the way of the hand.

IMG_20130703_155230x

Since the Gloveshot has a similar function to the wrist adapter, and the same design language as the Y-shot, it was my main inspiration during the sketching process.

IMG_20130703_155230x21

I finished the drawings for the prototype a couple of days ago, so now we’re just waiting for the side brackets to arrive. Can’t wait to put it together!

To be continued.

Whisker Biscuit Mount for Y-Shot Slingshot

I’m Daniel, an intern at Montie Design this summer and I’ll be starting my Senior year in Industrial Design at Appalachian State University this fall. I’ve been working on a Whisker Biscuit Mount for the Y-Shot Slingshot and it’s going pretty well.

I started by looking into ways that people were already shooting arrows from slingshots and ran across a video by Dave Cantebury. Dave was using a simple keyring and a few pieces of rubber to shoot arrows from his slingshot. This looked like a great idea to me, so I used the Y-Shot Arrow Rest with some pieces of shock cord to make a similar set up. It worked great but, a whisker biscuit would be better. This gave me an idea for how to mount the whisker biscuit and use brackets from the Y-Shot Arrow Rest.

The concept is a tube that will hold the whisker biscuit in place and use shock and cable to attach to the Y-Shot brackets. So far, everything is going well and we should be working on a model soon.

Thanks for Reading,
Daniel Helms

New Projects – Richard

Arriving as an intern at Montie Design really gets you straight into the action. I study Industrial Design Engineering at Chalmers University in Sweden and will spend the summer as an intern at Montie Design. Some of the smaller project us interns have started are based on accessorizing the popular Y-shot slingshot. Many ideas are flowing and below is one example which is a sight system that will be mounted on the side of the slingshot.

Regards,

Richard

Coco’s Campfire Bench and End Table

A bench needs an end table. Coco has been hard at work on putting together the design for the matching end table. Here are the results.

The wings on either side are a place to put personal items, maybe a book or a flashlight. The top surface can hold a plate, drinks or cell phone.

Intern Project – Campfire Bench

coco and her assignment

I am coco, an industrial design graduate student at NCSU. I am an intern at Montie Design this winter. I am now working on the outdoor wood bench design. This bench design focuses on the customer need which has a hanger for people to put their back packs and their coat when they feel hot and a hook for people to hang on the garbage when they talk with their family member and take some snacks.

sketching

The following picture shows how the concept developed.  Fist I have three different ideas about the bench and then narrow down to one idea. Secondly I started to have different styling about the concept and at last I decided the assemble method.

Sketching / Ideation Process

final design

This is the outdoor bench. In order to matches the whole environment, the design comes from the tree branch and also matches the function of it.

The higher one on the right is the hanger of the coats or backpacks. The small one on the left is hook for people to hang on the garbage bag or other paper or plastic bags. The first purpose of this bench is setting around the camping fire. So at the bottom of the bench, there is a shelf for people to store the fire wood.

Intern Update – Rachael Hughes

Hello Montie Gear community!  I am Rachael Hughes, a design/drafting intern here at Montie Design since January 2013.  I am currently a senior at North Carolina State University in Technology, Engineering, and Design Education with a concentration in Graphic Communications.

My most recent project at Montie Design grew from a challenge from Montie to design a product for family car camping.

The Concept:

I decided to design a product or products that would keep your utensils from setting on the surfaces typical to camping, such as the picnic table or the top of your cooler.  (The current design is at the bottom of this blog.)

The Design Process:

The first design was a simple, flat product that could be hung up and held cooking utensils, eating utensils, and dish towels.  To hold a dishtowel, a slot could be used, but then the moisture from one towel could be transferred to the other, so I instead used a keyhole design, so that the corner of the towel could be inserted into the larger end and pinched tightly into the smaller end of the keyhole.

Version 1:

0DryingRackSingleSlots 0DryingRackSingleDims 0DryingRackSingle

Version 1 Prototype:

0DryingRackProto

The prototype for this version proved to be very crowded when all functions were used, so I went back to the drawing board (in my case, SolidWorks) and began to redesign.  To alleviate the issue of crowdedness, I decided to break the product down into three pieces.

Version 2:

Cooking Utensils Rest:

1CU

Eating Utensils Rest:

1EU

Dish Towel Hanger:

1DT

The Cooking and Eating Utensils Rest idea developed into a design that could be used by hanging from a carabiner or at the picnic table like the prototypes show.

Version 2 Prototypes:

Cooking Utensils Rest:

A

B

Eating Utensils Rest:

C B

A

Dish Towel Holder:

A

B

During testing these prototypes, I was able to make sure that this design could also hang from a carabiner and still efficiently hold the silverware as well.

It was during this phase that I also developed an idea for a Paper Towel Holder.

Version 2 Add-On:

Paper Towel Holder:

1PTwCord

Using the same shape as the Dish Towel Holder, a wire could be permanently connected at one corner, ran through the paper towel roll, guided through a small notch for  stability, and a loop on the end could attach right to the carabiner.

Version 2 Add-On Prototype:

A

B

The four items comprised The Clean Kitchen Set, Version 2:

1ProtoSet

1Cara4Set

The Current Design:

After consideration, the this specific Paper Towel Holder has been excluded from the set because ideation sessions with Montie yielded a completely different configuration to be pursued at a later date.  The Cooking Utensils Rest, the Eating Utensils Rest, and the Dish Towel Holder, however, have continued to develop.  The design of the Cooking Utensils Rest and the Eating Utensils Rest are as follows:

2CU

2CUDrawing

2EU

2EUDrawing

The final design of the Dish Towel Holder has not yet been decided on, but here are the  three contenders:

Option A:

DT-A Proto2

DT-A Proto

Option B:

DT-B

DT-B Drawing

Option C:

DT-C

DT-C Drawing

DT-C Proto2

DT-C Proto

(If you have any suggestions, or preferences, please feel free to leave a comment for me!)

Current Status:

The Cooking Utensils Rest, Eating Utensils Rest, and all three possible versions of the Dish Towel Holder are currently being cut at a water jet cutting facility nearby.  We are testing these designs in both aluminum and ABS plastic.  I will update soon with pictures of the prototypes when we receive them.

Fun Stuff – EMP Resistant Box

I think its fitting that the parts for the EMP Resistant box came back on the same day as the first night of the new season of Revolution!  No irony is lost there.  For those of you who don’t follow Revolution, its a TV show about an EMP like device that takes down life in America as we know it.  If you’re a prepper, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

You can see below where we have assembled the shell for the lower portion of the box.

IMG_2767

Then we check to make sure the box is square in the fixture.

emp box_inside

As Hannibal (A-Team) said “I love it when a plan comes together”.  The fact that just about everything fit together first try without any major “Adjustments”  resulted in a lot of smiles.

EMP Box_Mike Smiling

The next step is to make a small adjustment to a some minor parts on the bottom of the main chassis, deburr the plates, reassemble and carry to the welder.

Have a great day and enjoy Revolution tonight, as you’re wonder if you need an EMP resistant box too.  I’m pretty where you can get a really nice one to keep all of your electronics safe.  The EMP resistant box should be available on the Montie Gear site in about 60 days if all goes well.

Have a great evening!

New Montie Gear Website

When we originally built the Montie Gear site we were looking to generate a modest amount of interest and website traffic.  To our surprise, we soon found this interest to be well beyond our initial expectations.  This is a good problem and now we have a great solution with an enhanced web presence and easier to use shopping cart to better handle orders more quickly.  If you get a chance, please check out the new website at www.montiegear.com.

We’ve also been busy with new products (between jobs for clients).  These products include the break-down arrow for the slingshot, the camp shelf (2012 Montie Gear Contest winner from NCSU), Hunter’s Friend for tree stands and the garbage bag holder (solving a simple problem in a simple and cool way by a Cary High student).  These products should all be available for sale sometime in Q4.  Other products in the pipeline include the Montie Gear ultralight knife and the advanced bow sight.  We are having way too much fun with these products.

Cheers,

Montie

Internship Progress 2

My summer internship is wrapping up! In this post you can see how we have defined our product vision and how it is starting to come to life. What started off as one product has developed into three separate but interconnected products. They will be the Utility Shelf, Camping Sink, and the Utility Strap. We see these products working great independently, but also coming together to create a center for camping activity. The Utility Shelf acts as the base for bringing the other two products together. We started designing the shelf first and have taken it through the prototype stage and hope to have a final version out soon. The other two products will be developed later as “accessories” to the shelf. We’re excited to see the results, and to hear what people think!

Prototype Break Down Arrow Prototype Tested

One of the most popular requests has been for an arrow rest.  We now have an lightweight arrow rest available that can be added to the mighty Montie Gear slingshot.  One of the things that we realized from the beginning that would also need a break down arrow.  I’m happy to report that I just took a few a test shot from a breakdown arrow that works great with the arrow rest.  It assembles in less than 5 seconds and breaks down into a 10 inch package in an even shorter time.  The arrow rest mounts to the Y-shot slingshot in less than 30 seconds, so the arrow had to be just as quick to deploy (and it is).  We should have pictures in a week or so.

Here is the arrow rest with a standard arrow:

Internship Progress

Luca Harrell here with an update on my summer internship at Montie Design!  In this post you can see some of the market research and initial concepts I’ve done to identify common camping needs and define a product direction for this project.  While I’ll admit that researching isn’t the most exciting part of design, it has been a very helpful and integral part of the process.  From this research, we’ve identified the need for products that offer both stability and portability.  Initial concepts began with these two factors in mind.  We want this product to feel rock solid while in use but be able to pack away to fit anywhere. Sound like a challenge?
